Do you look after or help support a family member, partner or friend because of their illness, disability or emotional distress? Do you know someone else who does this? We're hosting some on-line drop-in events coming up soon, so why not drop in for a virtual cuppa and a private chat? Here are some quotes from people in this situation who responded to a Healthwatch Hampshire survey last year: "Sorting out the medication and prescription for my parents and myself was a nightmare in the early days of lockdown - I had to wait in queues at the chemist for up to 1.5 hours so eventually I took a deckchair! It wasn't just the waiting around, but the number of errors that the chemists made - at one stage 8 out of 9 sets of prescriptions were wrong.” "A 22-year-old with learning disabilities unable to access any of his normal services. We did what we could to help him to stay busy, but he has gradually become more and more frustrated and low in mood.” "Frustration that I am unable to support my brother and his mental health is worrying.” "It has been difficult at times with no experience of caring for an old person let alone someone with health issues during a pandemic when they don’t understand why they can’t go out or know what the rules are." Even though restrictions are easing now and more support is available again, it can be difficult still to know where to go. So check out the dates via this link - next drop-in event is today at 5.30pm! Click here to register and access the zoom link. “Why should we all use our creative power……? Because there is nothing that makes people so generous, joyful, lively, bold and compassionate, so indifferent to fighting and the accumulation of objects and money” Brenda Ueland. The Nexus Project is a new creative and wellbeing group for women, set up in partnership with the Independence and Wellbeing Team at Portsmouth City Council, and funded through the Tampon Tax Fund. Next Zoom session on 22 June from 11am to 12.30pm All you need to join in on 22 June is some strong coffee dregs in a cup, pen and paper, a straw, and a paint brush or an old toothbrush. Many people have taken on extra care and support for a loved one since the coronavirus pandemic began. Local and national surveys have found that many in this situation have struggled with their own wellbeing – feeling isolated, frustrated, sad, worried, bored, trapped and fearful about the future. Next week - 7-13 June is National Carers Week, an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as 'carers' to access much needed support. On Thursday 10 June, we're hosting a drop-in event on zoom. You can drop in at anytime between 4:30-6:30pm to have a chat. You'll be able to speak to someone individually, or just hear more about the kind of support we can offer. Click here to register and access the zoom link. On the above link you can also view the webinar recording of our Caring Thru Covid event, with speakers from the Hive Portsmouth, and Healthwatch Hampshire, and lots of useful information. Or you can click here to watch the webinar via Facebook If you'd like to speak to someone direct, please ring Carolyn on 023 9310 6042 or email carolyn@goodmentalhealth.org.uk |
